Pat’s Christmas wish comes true

Pat’s Christmas wish comes true

As part of our Wish Maker initiative launched earlier this year, Woodley Grange has granted a special Christmas wish for their resident Pat.

Pat’s wish was to go Christmas shopping to buy gifts for her family. Unfortunately, due to COVID this wasn’t possible, so Woodley Grange decided to bring the shops to Pat!

Thanks to generous donations made by staff, relatives and local Romsey businesses, Woodley Grange were able to host their very own Winter Emporium. Even a till was kindly donated to help create a realistic shopping experience for the residents.

Commenting on Pat’s Christmas wish, Jess and Erica from the Woodley Grange activities team, said; “This year has been a struggle for most of us but especially for people living in care homes, having minimal contact with family and friends and not being able to pop out to the shops or to a café. When we heard that Pat wanted to do shopping for her family, we knew we had to try and make that happen, not just for her but for all the other residents that would benefit from it. We knew actually going shopping was too much of a risk, so we decided to bring the shops to us. We have been blown away with the kindness from everyone who has supported us and helped make this happen, thank you.”

After enjoying her Christmas wish, Pat; said “It’s been really nice to get out, do some shopping and treat my friend to some cake, I’ve loved it!”

On behalf of the team here at Manucourt, we would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who donated gifts. Without you, this would not have been possible.

We look forward to granting the next wish!

How our residents are keeping fit

How our residents are keeping fit

We have our very own Joe Wicks at Woodley Grange and Barton Lodge!

Whilst the nation turns to home workouts to keep fit during lockdown, our wonderful activities teams have been running regular, fun exercise sessions to keep our residents active.

Exercise not only improves their physical fitness and mobility, it can also positively impact sleep, confidence, self-esteem and mood!

Here are just some of the physical activities residents of all abilities enjoy:

Balloon games

Where there are balloons, there is fun! This is a popular exercise for the arms and is suitable for residents living with dementia.

Parachute games

Our residents love playing with the parachute. Not only does it provide gentle physical activity, it also encourages social interaction.

Armchair exercises

This is a great activity for residents with limited mobility. It puts less pressure on lower body joints like knees and ankles.

Our beautiful gardens at Woodley Grange and Barton lodge provide the perfect backdrop for a gentle stroll in the fresh air and the opportunity to soak up some vital vitamin D.

And not forgetting, dancing

Research has found that dancing improves strength and muscle function, which helps reduce the risk of falls. It’s also great fun for our residents and team.

The importance of person-centred care activities

Person-Centred Care Activities play an important part in every person’s care plan, especially for individuals living with dementia.

Wish Makers Campaign – Helping our residents’ dreams come true!

Wish Makers Campaign – Helping our residents’ dreams come true!

Manucourt is excited to announce the launch of the Barton Lodge and Woodley Grange Wish Makers campaign.

To help raise spirits during this difficult time, we’ve set ourselves a challenge – granting the wishes and dreams of our residents.

How Wish Makers works

Barton Lodge and Woodley Grange now each have a wishing well on site. With the assistance of our activities team, residents will be encouraged to make their wish by filling out a wish form and dropping it into the well – these can be found in the reception area of both homes.

Every month, a wish will be picked from each well and the team will work closely with our contacts and the local community to make the dream, big or small, become reality (or as near as realistically possible).

The challenging circumstances means we will all have to think creatively, but the need for hope and happiness has never been greater than it is right now.

Get involved

To make this programme a success, we ask for family members and friends to encourage their loved ones to drop their wishes into a well. We also welcome relatives and friends to email in any wishes they know their loved ones have always had.

Rizwan Walji – Operations Director expresses his excitement of the programme commencing: “Putting a smile on our residents’ faces is so important to us, so we are thrilled to roll out the ‘Wish Makers’ campaign across Barton Lodge and Woodley Grange. Whilst we know it will be difficult due to the current challenges we’re facing in the UK, we’re looking forward to doing our very best to make their wishes come true.”

Celebrating special moments from lockdown

With Woodley Grange and Barton Lodge sadly closing their doors to visitors and outside entertainers in March, our amazing team rallied together to find creative ways to keep residents entertained and lift spirits during lockdown.

Amanda qualifies as a Mental Health First Aider

Woodley Grange Manager qualifies as a Mental Health First Aider

As a care home group committed to the wellbeing of our staff, and in a society where mental health is becoming ever more prevalent, we’re delighted to announce that Woodley Grange Manager, Amanda Cooper, has recently completed her Mental Health First Aider course.

The two-day course, developed by Mental Health First Aid England and St Johns Ambulance, gave Amanda an in-depth look at mental health in the workplace, helping her understand the factors affecting wellbeing and how to spot the signs of mental illness, as well as giving her the confidence to be able to support staff both at Woodley Grange & Barton Lodge with their wellbeing.

Commenting on the two-day course, Amanda said, “I was really pleased to see so many people in attendance and found the knowledge gained invaluable.”

With Amanda’s new qualification, we have set up a confidential email address for both Barton Lodge & Woodley Grange, where staff can send their concerns free of judgement, in order to receive the support they need.

Amanda is also currently formalising our mental health policy, so that staff can be provided with an easy-to-understand resource on how they go about getting support from Amanda and where to go if they need professional help.

In the coming months, we also hope to send a member of staff from Barton Lodge to complete their Mental Health First Aider training, to provide staff at Barton with their own on-site Mental Health First Aider.

Woodley Art Session

Woodley bring together two generations for weekly arts sessions

The positive social effects of older generations spending time with young children are well documented, so here at Woodley we have developed an excellent relationship with Imagine This! – a local company who carry out workshops at the home; bringing together our residents with local children for weekly art sessions.

Each session has a different theme. In the past we’ve had a dinosaur, seaside and a safari inspired ‘walk on the wild side’ theme. In the next few weeks we’ll be getting in the festive spirit with Christmas themed workshops, which we’re particularly excited for.

The residents enjoy the sessions immensely, as do the children, and it’s been great to see the improvement in our residents’ wellbeing since introducing the sessions earlier this year.
